About the Show

Cleopatra 2525 is a science fiction television series that premiered in 2000 and ran for two seasons. The series stars Jennifer Sky (Cleo), Gina Torres (Hel), and Victoria Pratt (Sarge). The series was part of Universal Television's "Back2Back Action Hour" and aired along side Xena: Warrior Princess and Jack of All Trades.

Cleopatra 2525 was co-produced by Sam Raimi, producer of Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and Robert Tapert, the husband of Lucy Lawless who starred in Xena. Although the series is set in a futuristic world, Raimi and Tapert were heavily influenced by the Amazons featured in the Xena television series. Cleo's actress, Jennifer Sky, played the role of "Amarice" (an Amazon) in the Xena series and impressed both producers with her performance and was immediately tapped to play Cleopatra based on her previous performance. Joel Tobeck (who played "Ares" on Hercules and Xena) and Danielle Cormack (who played "Ephiny" on Xena) are other talents who had made multiple appearances in Cleopatra 2525 and had previously worked with Sam Raimi on the Hercules and Xena series.

Synopsis

In the year 2001, exotic-dancer and actress-aspirant Cleopatra (Jennifer Sky) went in for breast augmentation surgery however something went wrong when she was anesthetized and doctors were unable to awaken her. She was cryogenically frozen until the problem could be determined and she could be awakened. Cleo awakens, 500 years in the future, in an illegal lab/hospital underground, where she meets two women: Hel (Gina Torres) and Sarge (Victoria Pratt).

The world has changed drastically since Cleo's time. At some point giant flying robots, known as "Baileys" attacked the Earth and seized control of the Earth's surface. Humans were forced to retreat underground in order to escape the Baileys and have built a civiliation beneath the Earth's surface, living on different "levels" that are connected by "shafts". Since the large Baileys are unable to enter the underground, they have created human-like robots known as "Betrayers" and attempt to use them to infiltrate the human underground world and destroy it.

To fight back against the Baileys and Betrayers, individual resistance teams known as "Voice Teams" are formed and led by the mysterious "Voice". Voice, a woman whose identity is hidden from the teams to ensure that the capture or defeat of one team does not bring down all the teams, issues commands and orders to a select individual in each team through an implanted hearing device. Hel and Sarge, along with a former Betrayer named Mauser, make up one of the many Voice Teams.

After being injured by a Betrayer, Hel and Sarge drop in to the illegal lab where Cleo is, in order to get a new kidney transplanted for Sarge. While there, the Betrayer that injured Sarge bursts in and opens fire. Sarge, Hel, and Cleo make their escape from the lab and head to the Team's base. Cleo is brought up to speed on the situation, and after helping to defeat the Betrayer after them, Cleo decides to join up with the team in the fight to take back the Earth's surface.
